Tradesman Marketing Series: Posting on Social Media is NOT Marketing.

Posting on social media is not advertising

We've all seen companies on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok posting the "look at our work" videos. Have you ever looked at those pictures and then thought I know, i'm going to pick up the phone and give them a call? You might think that looks good and scroll onto the next post, but have you ever stopped what you're doing and call them to do work at your home? Exactly. Posting on social media is not advertising. In this article we will look in detail in how to build a marketing plan for your business.

Rather than posting and showing "look how great our business is" why not start thinking "what is going to get a customer to call me"? What does a good article, post or advert look like and what's it going to take to get a customer to call you?

Before we get into that, let's go back to the beginning. Remember me saying in the last article that you need to think about your ideal job. Let's take that one step further and think about your ideal customer. Who contacts you the most for the highest profit jobs? This could be Joan, the 70 year old, old age pensioner who lives with her husband in a 3 bed semi-detached house, or it could be Matt, the 35 year old professional working from his flat in the city centre? Who is your ideal client and why do they fit the criteria?

Now you've started thinking about your ideal customer, let's think about your business. Have you ever thought about how you and your business comes across to a potential customer. The tone and type of language you use is extremely important. You're not talking to a mate down the pub. You're talking to a potential customer. A customer who is looking for reasons not to use you and move onto someone else. For me personally, every single step of the business is built around trust. If someone is going to pay you hundreds or thousands of pounds, they have to believe they are going to get the quality job. One thing I hear tradesman say all the time is "oh well we just need to do a good job and that will be enough". The big problem is, you need the customer to book with you first before you get a chance to do "the good job". If they don't know your business how will they ever know how good you are?

The following articles will look at building a credible business which people will rely on. Yes it takes some work at the start but once you have the framework you can sit back and let the work you've done, work for you going on into the future.

Social media marketing can be very powerful. It's also very time consuming but, it's free at the same time (mostly free), so use it to your advantage. Understand the difference between posting pictures of your work and advertising which is building trust for your business.
